If you want to remove the possibility of noise from other phone appliances or phone wiring in your home as the source of the problem, you can plug your ADSL modem directly into the BT test socket as described here:
(The one with the test socket has a small recess accross the top.)
If you get improved results like that you can buy a replacement faceplate – and irradicate the need for Microfilters on all other sockets. I actually bought the replacement NTTE5 face plate (around £10) and discovered the source noise was actually from a poor connection on one of the other telephone spur sockets. I can certainly vouch that I now get much more consistantly reliable speeds (@2.5Meg).
